Ingredients
  

  • 4 large onions yellow or red
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • Salt to taste
  • 1 teaspoon sugar optional
  • Fresh thyme optional

Instructions
 

  • Slice the onions thinly to ensure even cooking.
  • Heat olive oil and butter in a large skillet over medium heat.
  • Add the sliced onions to the skillet, stirring to coat.
  • Sprinkle a pinch of salt over the onions.
  • Cook for about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  • Reduce heat to low and continue cooking for 30-40 minutes.
  • Add sugar if desired to enhance sweetness.
  • Continue cooking until onions are deep golden brown.
  • Add fresh thyme in the last few minutes of cooking.
  • Remove from heat and serve warm or store for later.
